Description

Oka Bioembalagens, led by designer Érika Cezarini Cardoso and recently joined by Carol Bardi (CEO) and Alexandre Villela (PhD in Chemistry), has been developing packaging solutions for 5 years with concepts dating back nearly two decades. The team aims to tackle the global plastic pollution crisis, where 450 million tons of plastic are produced annually, with Brazil as the fourth-largest producer, all while promoting the cassava agricultural value chain and uplifting smallholder farmers.

Their solution delivers compostable, edible, fossil fuel-free packaging made from cassava, capable of replacing single-use plastics and paper products. The innovation includes both the products and proprietary modular machines with exchangeable molds, enabling local production of various packaging types by communities or by brands themselves, reducing logistics costs and footprints.

The company is shifting from direct production to a license-based business model, where communities finance the machines (with 1–2 year payback periods) while Oka drives product development, secures customers, and distributes demand across community-based biofactories.
